LeBron James is Proving he is “More Than An Athlete” with Series Debut

LeBron James is not President Donald Trump’s biggest fan. In fact, LBJ criticized Trump back in February because he, “really [doesn’t] give a (expletive) about the people.”

In response to LBJ, Fox News host Laura Ingraham fired back saying, “it’s always unwise to seek political advice from someone who gets paid $100 million a year to bounce a ball.”

So, using his Instagram platform- where he can speak to his 45 million+ followers– LBJ responded with a simple post that read, “I AM MORE THAN AN ATHLETE.” With this, also came the hashtag, #wewillnotshutupanddribble.

However, LeBron James didn’t stop at a couple posts, a couple comments, and a couple interviews. He wanted to show that he was, in fact, more than an athlete.

Last week on November 20th, LBJ’s series debut of “More Than an Athlete” premiered on ESPN+. The eight-episode series focuses on providing the audience with a look at the athlete’s life off the basketball court. Episodes will include LeBron’s journey of developing his passions in life as a businessman, philanthropist, and father. The second episode includes a comparison of his decision to sign with the Miami heat with unseen footage of his free-agent signing with the Los Angeles Lakers.

LeBron James has displayed an unparalleled commitment to helping Akron, a place that fostered his basketball career. He’s set up basketball camps for young athletes all across the U.S., provided several scholarships, and helped open the I Promise School for at-risk children.

““When people ask me, ‘Why a school?’ that’s part of the reason why,” James said. “Because I know exactly what these 240 kids are going through. I know the streets that they walk. I know the trials and tribulations that they go through. I know the ups, the downs.”

The I Promise School was crafted with LeBron’s connection to the children struggling in Akron. He’s created a school with a 20-to-1 student-teacher ratio and a commitment to providing a safe space for children to grow.

So, has LeBron James proved to Ingraham that he can do more than bounce a ball? Definitely. But, he didn’t need to prove anything to her- his goal wasn’t to compete with her, to retaliate, or to present himself as superior. His goal was to raise awareness and instill confidence in others to use their platform to speak up on issues existing in today’s world. LeBron James has contributed significantly to the push for a better future for younger generations. He has set an example for other athletes to continue to make an impact on something bigger than winning games.
