Stop Holding on to the Past.

The NFL has always been a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league where prior success does not always lead to job security for the future. However there are a few cases currently that some organization have ignored this mantra and kept ineffective players and coaches for far too long and it’s time to let go of the past in hopes of a better future.

Eli Manning, QB, NY Giants

Eli Manning has accomplished a lot in his time with the Giants since the Giants made a draft day trade to acquire him from the San Diego Chargers. He is undefeated in the two Super Bowls he has led the team to and have made multiple pro bowl teams. However since 2008 they have only won 10+ games in a season once and only one season that ended with a playoff victory. Coaches have changed and much of the team around him but now he has offensive weapons in Beckham and Barkley, but he still isn’t winning games. It has been years since Eli was considered a top tier QB and at 37 years old it likely won’t be getting better for Eli. With talented young QB’s coming out of college this year and the Giants likely to have a top 10 draft pick the New York Giants organization needs to move on and look to the future now.

Mike McCarthy, Head Coach, Green Bay Packers

Mike McCarthy has been the head coach of the Green Bay Packers since the 2006 season. He has enjoyed mild success going to the playoff nine times under his tenure and won the Super Bowl in the 2010-2011 season. Most coaches with that type of success would expect to have job security. However, Mike McCarthy has only been won more than one playoff game twice and that is with Quarterback Aaron Rodgers. It has been debated on TV and in bars across America is Rodgers is the best quarterback of all time. Rodgers mobility, football iq, and strong arm is what makes him talked about at a G.O.A.T. and when being in that conversation you would expect Aaron to have much more post-season success, sadly that is not the case.

This is a case of “who is more important” and the answer is Aaron Rodgers. i believe he could go to any other team and have just as much success or more but with how the Packers organization has failed to put weapons around Rodgers and are generally accused of being cheap and not willing to pay top free agents there needs to be a change. That change needs to come in the form of getting Mike McCarthy out of town and bring in a coach that is willing to bring in weapons and build a solid defense.

Jason Garrett, Head Coach, Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys hired Jason Garret after the 2010 season after he was promoted to interim head coach half way through the season and lead the team to 5-3 to close the season. Since he was hired full time he has only had 2 seasons with above 10 wins wit 2 playoff appearances and only 1 win. Owner Jerry Jones has defended Garrett at every step of his career and that should be running thin. In 2014 he was able to catch lightning in a bottle with a pair of rookie stars in Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot, you would expect for them to be able to replicate that success in the following years but they have not made the playoffs since that time.

Jason Garrett is considered to be one of Jerry Jones’ “guys” but its time to let this guy go.
