NFL International Series Mexico City: To Play or Not to Play?

Since 2007, the NFL has been holding regular season games outside of America in an attempt to grow their international brand. They’ve had a significant presence in London, and are trying to build that same presence in Mexico City.

For the 2018 season, the NFL plans on having their third consecutive game played in Mexico City at Estadio Azteca Stadium. It is scheduled for Monday November 19th, and will be held between the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs.

This game is incredibly important, as both teams are 9-1. It has potential to fortify Super Bowl hopes for the winning team. But, field conditions in the stadium are causing possible complications.

A few weeks ago, a Mexican television network organized a massive concert in Estadio Azteca. The field was covered in stages, lights, and people. This proved to be extremely damaging to the combination grass and synthetic filler field.

The condition of the field is now potentially dangerous for players. The NFL is considering its options, and the possibility that the game might be relocated.  They might have to move the game back to the Rams, who held open their venue in Los Angeles for precautionary measures.

According to Bleacher Report, some players are even considering not making the trip to Mexico City, claiming that the potentially unsafe field conditions are too big of a risk.

It seems the NFL has two options:

  • Play the game in Mexico City, and possibly risk the safety of the players in one of the most important games of the season.
  • Relocate the game to Los Angeles and lose progress made in terms of holding more than two consecutive games in Mexico City, thus potentially losing the interest of Mexican fans.

While relocating the game may lose ground in terms of promoting the NFL internationally, it would be selfish if the NFL made the decision based on revenue and promotion, and not on the safety of the players. If the field conditions are a serious threat, player safety and well-being should take precedence in deciding where the game is played.
