Final Project Proposal
Final Project: Multimedia Character Study
—#1—————————————————————————————————————
Subject: I want to write a story on the Lane County Farmer’s Market in Eugene.
Theme: The theme is how imports that increase carbon emission and greenhouse gases are affecting our environment.
Angle: I would like to focus this article on the contrast between the negative components of the American food industry and the positives of buying local and organic.
Story: I will tell this story by visiting the farmer’s market and interviewing local producers and consumers concerning this issue. I would also like to follow the journey our food takes from the local farm, to the market, and then on to the consumer’s dinner table.
What Kind of Story: I would like to write this as a feature with an underlying goal to educate consumers. It will be written in third person and told through the personal experience of either a local farmer or consumer who is connected to the farmer’s market.
Key Scenes and Points:
- An average day at the Farmer’s Market in downtown Eugene to establish the scene and characters of the story.
- A conversation or interaction between a customer and producer to illustrate how this alternative to modern grocery shopping is more personal and customer friendly.
- A shot of the producer at their farm to demonstrate the locality and set the starting place of the food.
- A shot of a consumer cooking or preparing the local organic food they purchased at their home to show where the journey ends.
- Conversations with the producers and consumers to establish their personal connection and commitment to the issues. OR. A shot of people shopping at a modern grocery story to exemplify how this experience is more impersonal, anonymous, and distant.
Equipment needed: T1i DSLR Camera, audio recorder, Lav mic.
Sources: my sources will be the producers and consumers for personal accounts as well as board members for an official source.
Market: I will add this piece to my portfolio.
Qualifications: I am qualified to write this story because I have several years of writing experience focused on the arts and local community culture. In a class I took last year I was exposed to the flaws and negative components of the food industry in America concerning the environmental affect and animal rights. This summer I studied abroad in France where locals rarely go to one store for all their groceries. Food is an essential aspect of French culture and the people care about where they purchase their products as well as their quality. My host mother would visit the local market almost every day to purchase fresh ingredients for dinner. And every morning one of my host parents would run to the Pâtisserie for fresh baguettes and croissants.

Subject: I want to write story on the pros and cons of pursuing a creative career in this modern age with the present economy.
Theme: The theme is how creative minds are an essential asset to our nation, but more and more students are pursuing scientific degrees and the creative arts are suffering as a result.
Angle: I would like to focus this article on local art students and artisans, their contribution to the community as well as their personal struggles and accomplishments.
Story: I will tell this story by visiting the local Saturday market and upcoming holiday market. I would like to interview local crafters and artisans who are actively working in the industry as well as students who are entering the field.
What Kind of Story: I would like to write this as a feature on a specific fascinating individual with the underlying motivation of exemplifying why and how the arts are a crucial component to our community.
Key Scenes and Points:
- An average day at the Saturday market or holiday market to establish the scene and characters of the story.
- A local artist or student working in their studio to demonstrate their creative process as well as begin character development.
- A conversation or interaction between a customer and artist to show how people appreciate art and why it is important.
- If there is a creative craft like pottery or knit products, perhaps a shot of the customer enjoying their purchase.
- Background and personal information on the artist and what inspires them to make the feature more engaging and personable to the viewer.
Equipment needed: T1i DSLR Camera, audio recorder, Lav mic.
Sources: my sources will be local artists and art students for personal accounts as well as board members of the Saturday market or other local art community official source.
Market: I will add this piece to my portfolio.
Qualifications: I am qualified to write this story because I have experience writing on the arts and have made several contacts in the community. I studied art in high school as well as worked with a local illustrator to complete my own children’s book. Also, I personally enjoy visiting holiday bazaars and local markets to purchase handmade gifts rather than imported mass produced products.
