Caffé culturale Ital 104 W20

Caffé culturale assignments were a great tool to learn more about culture in Italy. Learning more about Italy besides the language but customs and lifestyle of Italians. This is important when learning a language because it helps with speaking like one that is fluent when you know customs like when we learned about greetings in Italy. The topic of greetings was our first assignment and helped knowing how Italians greet one another. Like about the infamous double cheek kiss on the cheek that is done in Italy unlike in The United States. I learned that this interaction is reserved for a casual social setting like with friends but it would not be appropriate at a business meeting. It’s not actually kissing someone’s cheek unless they are a really close friend or family member. These assignments also made us analyze the differences between what we do in the United States and what is a custom in Italy to see how cultures differ. Another one of my favorite topics was eating the Italian way because it put into perspective the differences between the United States and Italy when it comes to something as simple as eating. Italians have meals at different times of the day where there are specific foods and traditions that differ from Americans. The order of meals is breakfast, lunch, merenda (snack for children),  and finally dinner. Italians have many rules when it comes to eating as eating is a very important part of the culture and in the end its for pleasure and enjoyment. These rules differ from American dining as there are not that many rules but in Italy, for example, bread is not to be eaten with pasta. The way Italians eat is very interesting because there are certain standards and rules but in the end, it’s for the experience of making eating pleasurable and enjoyable part of the day. What I do like and wish we had here in America are the bars from Italy as a way to eat throughout the day rather than the typical fast-food found here. Doing these assignments put into perspective the culture of another country and made me see my own lifestyle differently and wanting to complete other cultures into mine to enhance it.
