What is IML Creative Space?
The IML Creative Space is a weekly meeting for anyone interested in getting involved with immersive media, whether it is virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), digital games, or any form of 3D environments. At IML Creative Space, we give you time to play and experiment with these technologies and a space, as well as like-minded people, to figure out how to make content for them. Have you ever wondered how to make a game or virtual experience? This is the place for you! Eventually, we hope to start publishing and showcasing your work, but even if you just want to try virtual or augmented reality for the first time, or meet fellow game makers and digital dabblers, then this is the place for you!
Who should come to the IML Creative Space?
Anyone! No prior skills or knowledge about immersive media is required. The IML Creative Space is more about a mindset, a willingness and eagerness to be exposed to and make immersive content, as well as work with others to troubleshoot problems and realize the potential of these technologies. You can come every week, or every once in a while. And if you have skills that might be useful for development: artistic skills, writing skills, programming, development, design, or modelling, we’ll hope to get you working with others, showing off your talents and start making things!
To that end, any UO member is welcome, including students, faculty and staff from across campus.
What do we do in the IML Creative Space?
Most weeks we’ll have a number of VR/AR headsets out for anyone to drop in and try out. Additionally, people will be collaborating and developing their own original work in informal groups, troubleshooting problems and brainstorming ideas together.
Each week, at varying times, we’ll all come together to chat about a particular immersive experience, which will be presented by any member of campus. It’s an opportunity to share work that inspires you!
Occasionally, we may collectively demo projects, have guest speakers to talk about their development work, or even throw challenges, hackathons and jams. Join our Slack channel (see more below) for more information.
What don’t we do? The Creative Space is not a class, nor a support desk. We want to use our time to both pursue our own projects with the help of a community and be a place for everyone to figure out and play with this technology together.
