Upon reading the article titled, What would Jane Austen do? A guide to social media etiquette, I immediately agreed. Given the fact that I myself recently deactivated (unlike deleting where your fb goes away permanently) my Facebook for some of the reasons stated in the article, I was enticed to read more. Facebook and other social media sites have become a hot-spot for people to dish the details on their private lives.
The ironic thing I’ve noticed is that most of the people who are “spilling the beans” are in person, complete introverts. Most of the time when I see a long post about someone’s awful day or horrible boss it’s usually from someone who tends to be more quiet and reserved in person. This can be both good and bad. Firstly, it’s positive that people who might normally feel unincluded now have a place to express their opinion. This can be also be a negative thing as this over-expression can seem misleading and unpersonable.
Back in my Myspace days I used the site as an outlet for self-expression and opinion. However as I’ve matured and realized that most people, other than my mom, don’t want to hear about my grade in Chemistry or latest break-up drama, I’ve discontinued such posts. Whenever I read Facebook posts from someone who continuously uses the site as their personal diary I cringe a little inside.
Don’t get me wrong, hearing the latest deets on Ryan Gosling’s new girlfriend or your ex’s inability to get that promotion can be highly entertaining and comical even, but save most of the drama for YOUR mama.
Now that most of my friends and I are a little lot older and hopefully more mature than we were back in high school, I hope that we can begin to express ourselves more professionally even on social media. Due to our ever-evolving technological world, it’s becoming increasingly popular for employees to google your name and find out a little personal information on you….or a LOT of personal information on you.
We can’t stop this business trend, but what we CAN do is ensure our employers see the image we want them to see. Here’s just a few tips for expressing yourself on social media:
1. Ask yourself: will my comment/status offend anyone? If so, is it worth it?
2. Honestly, save the drama for your mama. Unless it’s something that half of your Facebook friends might be interested in, text your best friend the hairy deets of last night instead.
3. No sexist, racist or crude comments/statuses. You’re only asking for negativity.
4. Don’t post something highly opinionated and not expect people to dish it back. If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.
5. Please, please, please at least somewhat spell-check. I know it’s only Facebook and you don’t intend it to be a grammar-free essay, but spelling every other word wrong just looks plain lazy.
