The article I chose to respond to this week discusses one athletes special announcement. Howard Bragman, founder and chairman of Fifteen Minutes Public Relations, prepared the NFL prospect to come out of the closet. Bragman has helped many athletes in the past with this same process and is thus an expertise.
The fact that there is a PR professional that can give specific advice to someone like this is incredible. With tons of experience, it is helpful and comforting to the athlete, Michael Sam, that there is a professional that knows how to help him make such an important announcement. With the athletic and entertainment industry becoming more accepting of gays rights, it is freeing to realize that individuals will no longer feel isolated.
This story reminds me of the basketball player, Jason Collins, who recently came out. Surprisingly, the response to his announcement was positive as he received support from President Obama, the basketball league, Kobe Bryant, David Stern (commissioner at the time), Nike and many celebrities. After this announcement, it came as no surprise that an NFL prospect was the next to speak up. With the pressure to be straight dwindling, it is expected that more players will be comfortable coming out within the near future. When players see the acceptance received by fans, they will more likely be willing to come out. This will then result in a chain effect and hopefully change the face of football for the better.
It is incredible to think the Public Relations world is expanding so much that there are people, such as Howard Bragman, who have skilled expertise in something as specific as this. To many, proclaiming your sexuality to the world might not seem like such a big deal, but when it jeopardizes your future career and how others perceive you, it is. With more and more celebrities coming out it it seems as if the old traditions are fading. However there will always be a stigma against homosexuality much like there is around race and sex.
Ignorance isn’t always bliss. And in this day in age it seems like everyone is beginning to understand the benefits of equality. No matter what your beliefs are on homosexuality, the football industry needs to realize that when it comes down to it, the NFL is about the love of football and a player’s homosexuality shouldn’t dictate the sport’s reputation.
