In a recent article my public relations teacher Kathryn Thier posted, CNN discusses the importance of speech preparation. The post features two videos of two acceptance award speeches, one from an older female Jacqueline Bisset while the other from Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence.
The two speeches share a similarity in that they both seem unprepared. However, one seems more natural than the other. After viewing Bisset’s speech, I felt uneasy and embarrassed for her random tangent. Lawrence on the other hand, although seemingly nervous, took a humorous approach to the situation by being completely honest about her emotions. I think most fans favored this as it is more easily relatable and completely candid.
In the public relations industry it is extremely important to always be prepared. Although some individuals may be able to ‘wing it’ better than others, it doesn’t hurt to have a few cue cards ready to read in case you forget your train of thought. This way, if a star gets lost, like Jazqueline Bisset, they can regather their thoughts in an organized fashion. When viewers acknowledge an individual as consistently unprepared it reflects on their character and how serious they take the entertainment business.
