Unit 4

Original Post

Unit 4 Goals:

  • Examine methods for evaluating qualities of art, such as product versus process, the difference between craft and fine art, must art be archival, and what is an aesthetic reaction.
  • Explore the notion of food as an art form.
  • Consider cultural differences in the production and consumption food.

Reflection

After writing my original piece and then beginning conversations with classmate’s through our comments on each others posts there was one thing that was brought up that I found really interesting: fast food vs. slow food. Is one more artistic than the other? Of course slow food sounds like it would be the most artistic because there are most likely more ingredients, a well-trained chef, presentation and restaurant atmosphere and that’s exactly what I thought at first but as our conversations continued and I started thinking about it more I think I changed my mind, or at least came up with a better argument for fast food.

A very popular trend in foodie culture is food trucks. A place where you can purchase a meal for a reasonable amount and it’s prepared quickly and usually lacking presentation but the taste, the taste is delicious. There’s something artistic about the food truck version of fast food in my opinion. Even Food Network thinks so; they have shows dedicated to food truck across America! I think when thinking of food as art you need to at least use all of the senses you use when you consume food- sight, taste and smell, a combination of those can create something pretty delicious and artistic in a quick manner.
