There really isn’t cooking involved in this “recipe” but a food / beverage tradition passed down 4 generations in my Mom’s family:
What – Can be a meal, can be an appetizer, or can be a snack
When – Any family gathering – holidays, weddings, funerals, graduation (friends may fill in for family if geography keeps you separate).
Recipe:
Simple Manhattan: 2 parts whiskey (blended, rye, bourbon, your choice), 1 part sweet vermouth, dash of bitters, and maraschino cherry (combine with ice and stir)
Creamed Herring: Buy whatever variety of herring in sour cream that you can find; buy original Triscuit crackers
- Make manhattans
- Open jar of creamed herring, place fork in jar for serving
- Open Triscuits and have napkins next to them
- Do not allow consumption of Manhattan without first eating creamed herring on a Triscuit. Note, those who will not eat creamed herring for other than dietary, cultural, or religious reasons are precluded from the event.
Substitutions: Any beverage may be substituted for the Manhattan. Sparkling non-alcoholic cider is strongly encouraged. Herring in white wine can be substituted for the creamed herring.
Key to the experience is enjoying this with friends and family and sharing new and old stories.
