Clan dcv on November 26, 2017November 26, 2017 This pictures shows a family tradition we’ve always had of watching the football games on Thanksgiving. This particular photo also shows some of my family on my father’s side which I would call a clan. We all relate back to one common ancestor which is proven to go back many generations.
Descent Group dcv on November 26, 2017November 28, 2017 This picture is very important to my research because it includes four generations of the males in my family. I made a connection between these four people and the “descent group” definition. Guest states, “Descent groups are often imagined as long chains of connections from your parents to children that reach back though many generations to a common ancestor or group of ancestors” (238). Affinal Relationship dcv on November 26, 2017November 28, 2017 This picture is showing my sister’s fiancé FaceTiming my sister while she was at work in Mexico. She was unable to make it to our traditional family dinner so we still included her over the phone. Guest states that an affinal relationship is “a kinship relationship stablished through marriage and/or alliance, not through biology or common descent” (246). Kenneth J. Guest. 2016. Cultural Anthology. W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. My sister’s fiancé, I learned, is now my brother through affinal ties.
Nuclear Family dcv on November 26, 2017November 27, 2017 My family is a little different than the nuclear family described in Kenneth J. Guest’s book. He describes the nuclear family as “The Father-husband-breadwinner went to work each day outside the home, while the mother-wife stayed home to take care of the household, raise the children, and be the ideal companion” (255). Kenneth J. Guest’s 2016. Cultural Anthropology. W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. As shown above, my father is the one who does all the cooking/at home work.
Traditions dcv on November 26, 2017November 26, 2017 Our family trip to our local grocery store teaches me that, in America we are so busy with many individual things that a trip to the grocery store as a family becomes something big for my family. Family norms are different for every family and I realized while doing my research that my family is extremely close but doesn’t often spend much time doing simple things together.
Where it All Begins dcv on November 21, 2017November 28, 2017 Thanksgiving for my family always begins with a family trip to the grocery store of course. We all pile in one car and head off to our local store named Ralphs. As shown in this picture, my mother always picks out the turkey even though she doesn’t do the cooking.
