Join our Cadre of Speech Language Pathology Cooperating Professionals

The COE places 30+ SLP graduate licensure clinicians in educational and clinical settings to help them earn clinical clock-hours, gain deep knowledge of student needs, institutional supports, and therapy strategies.

Mentor district supervisors typically host an SLP candidate for a term or two. Candidates start with you when staff return for the school year and then spend 10-weeks later in the year with the hosting SLP supervisor.

SLP Candidate Field Requirements:

There are multiple term placement options for mentors to host SLP candidates.

Supervision: Candidates are assigned a University supervisor to assist in managing the SLP candidate experience and ensure the assigned candidate is completing University and licensure requirements.­


SLP Cooperating Professional Minimum Approval Qualifications

  1. Meet ASHA and state license SLP endorsement requirements.
  2. Meet the 3-year experience requirement.
  3. Meet the ASHA requirement for 2 PD hours in the topic of Supervision.

Candidate works under supervision of district field supervisor, including 25% of time in direct supervision; a midterm and final assessment; and end of term approval of term clockhours. In term where licensure evaluation and assessments are required, supervisor receives a stipend. Additional benefits include professional development units, access to reduced tuition voucher, and Communication Disorder faculty collaboration opportunities. Pre-Service Candidate Field Placement

The UO works with field placement affiliated partners for approved cooperating professional placement opportunities. The SLP clinical professor assigns students to placements based on several factors including faculty recommendation, the student’s interest and prior experiences, availability of sites, and transportation limitations.

Clearance: As a prerequisite to entering the field, the UO requires that in addition to satisfactorily meeting all program requirements, graduate clinicians must complete the following:

  • Castle Branch Background Check Clearance
  • Oregon DHS mandatory reporting of child abuse
  • ASHA Professional Ethics training including FERPA & HIPPA

Field Activities:

  • Work directly with students with a variety of speech, language, communication, cognition, and swallowing disorders.
  • Able to assist with assessments related to language and social communication, brain injury, and language disorders.
