Issue: The War On Gluten

Present: 

The presence of gluten in America’s food supply has become more controversial as those with celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or self-proclaimed “gluten-free” diets, have made pushes for better regulation and labeling. Celiac disease affects an average affects of 1 in 133 Americans.[1] At this point the only treatment for Celiac is to eat food not containing gluten.[2] Gluten is found in wheat, barley, and rye. [3] It is what gives foods such as bread and pasta their signature shape.

Gluten intolerance is a growing condition too. A 2009 study found a higher risk of fatality among those with both Celiac and gluten intolerance.[4] Companies and restaurants, however, hadn’t catered to the small percentage of Americans with gluten sensitivity until the rise of the gluten-free diet. In Eugene, Sweet Life bakery noticed that Eugenians have wanted gluten-free items for years.[5]

In 2013 the FDA issued a rule regarding the labeling of “gluten-free” packaged goods.[6] Since then, companies have altered and introduced products to comply with the FDA’s standards. On average, however, gluten-free products are 242% more expensive than their gluten-filled counterparts.[7] Still, those who cannot have gluten are now seeing options in the realms of cereals, breads, and pastries that were previously inaccessible, inciting them to pay the heightened price. This has lead to a 63% increase of sales in the gluten-free food market from 2012-2014.[8] Still, 44% of Americans believe being gluten-free is a fad.[9]

Past: 

Gluten was first introduced to the human diet about 10,000 years ago.[10] Nutritionists believe that the human body has not fully evolved to digest gluten, and that has lead to Celiac and gluten intolerance. In the past 20 years, scientists have started to piece together Celiac disease.[11] When Dr. Guandalini migrated from Italy in 1996 he discovered that medical universities in America weren’t teaching to look for Celiac because they believed it to be extremely rare.[1] Since then, more patients have been diagnosed with Celiac and gluten intolerance, and the gluten-free market has grown.

Future: 

It is estimated that by 2017 gluten-free sales could grow to more than $6.6 billion.[13] That means there will be more innovations in the gluten-free market and a push for new treatments. Dr. Stefano Guandalini states a gluten-free pill will be available in the market in a few years, and that an injectable vaccine is in the foreseeable future.[14] Until then, the gluten-free diet fad has no clear end.
