The main idea of this project is to create a temporary community that can sustain itself, so that people can move in when the severely polluted “Old Cities” are being cleaned up and healing in a futuristic period. These structures are able to grow and spread out to connect with other similar structures to adapt to an ever-growing community. In the final review, I have received a lot of useful information that could help make the project more sophisticated. First of all, since the building is gigantic, a lot of space are wasted to create a central atrium, the building might not be too efficient in terms of the ratio between functional spaces and constructed areas. Although my idea is to put all necessary infrastructure into a single building, the scale might still exceed what is needed, which will also affect its relationship with the human scale.
To submit this project for competition, a few changes are anticipated. I am considering redesigning the tower that is currently occupied by the residential area; I will loosen it furthermore to create a more dynamic space and design. I will also create more diagrams, and a larger and more polished section that is able to show clearly the relationship between the atrium, the residential area and the skybelt. I will also work on the layout so that larger and more drawings could be added to the board without minimizing any plans and sectional drawings. The current layout consists of two large images with diagrams that are too small flowing around, which limited the space available for more supplemental information. I will also design a residential living module, showing the internal circulation as well as how spaces inside connect with each other. Besides, adding more information – maybe a storyline as suggested by one of the reviewers, about the site context and the time setting will help judges to understand the purpose of each design clearer; some research information and data about the problem that I am tackling will be helpful as well.
After this quarter, my knowledge in digital designing software definitely grows a lot; especially Grasshopper, which is really useful for my future designing projects. I will also incorporate the information obtained from the sunlight and shadow analyzing plugins for Grasshopper in my future studio projects.
