Mission: We surface authentic voices around the world through group process and participatory media creation. Our programs support people in sharing and bearing witness to stories that lead to learning, action, and positive change.
Internship Description:
I will be assisting CDS in designing and editing a Discussion Guide for a compilation of women’s human rights digital stories and a case study for Silence Speaks’ initiative Sonke Gender Justice: South Africa. I will also support facilitators in at least 3 different digital storytelling workshops dealing with education and facilitation.
Work-Learning Goals:
Learning Goal #1: To learn more about the field of storytelling
To be met through the following tasks and responsibilities:
- Getting to know the CDS model for digital storytelling through observation and involvement in programming.
- Reading literature about digital storytelling including CDS’s book Digital Storytelling: Capturing Lives, Creating Communities.
- Conducting informational interviews with practitioners in the field.
Learning Goal #2: To observe best practices for facilitating storytelling
To be met through the following tasks and responsibilities:
- Observing facilitation practices through at least 4 digital storytelling workshops.
- Assisting with an Intro to Facilitation workshop!
- Recording observations in notebook and reflections through private blog.
Learning Goal #3: To gain skills in story production
To be met through the following tasks and responsibilities:
- Designing and editing accompanying story production materials.
- Becoming more familiar with video editing software like Final Cut Express and iMovie.
- Updating a website for final presentation of story production.
Learning Goal #4: To explore!
To be met through the following tasks and responsibilities:
- Using connections at CDS to discover other storytelling organizations.
- Researching local arts & culture scene and attending events.
- Continuing to develop my research plan through exploration and discussion.
