Humanitarian Aid/Genocide in Ukraine

The Rwandan Genocide was a tragic event in 1994 that could’ve been lessened if other countries interviewed. The President of the United States at the time Bill Clinton stated “I don’t think we could have ended the violence, but I think we could have cut it down. And I regret it.”. The United States had the means to end or lessen the Rwandan genocide and it did not intervene. The United States should have intervened as humanitarian law states that when civilians are attacked it is unacceptable. Once innocent civilians were getting killed and injured the United States and the United Nations should have taken more steps to end the Rwandan genocide. “Humanitarian Law” is a set of rules all countries should follow in armed conflict. Some examples of Humanitarian law are prohibition of slavery, prohibition of torture, and not harming innocent civilians in time of armed conflict. In my region of Ukraine humanitarian law states the prohibition of torture and ill-treatment in detention, attacks on humanitarian medical workers, and the use of certain weapons such a nuclear or chemical weapons. This is a very prominent fact in present day as Ukraine is suffering from their own war

How Russia's Invasion of Ukraine Violates International Law | Council on Foreign Relationssome could even call a genocide. Russia has attacked Ukraine for un-just reasons and continues to injure civilians, and bomb sanctuaries. Ukraine in this situation has cried for help from NATO and is receiving much aid from countries such as the US. As the war against Ukraine continues, aiding countries are hesitant to send their soldiers on Ukraine soil in fear of becoming a next target of Russia or starting a new WWIII. Ukraine’s laws for freedom and humanitarianism are very similar to the West’s and they even have joined NATO. Ukrainian laws protect all individuals and demand equal rights for all genders, ethnicities, ect. All over the world people have different opinions on human rights because of differences in religion/culture. In Asian cultures like in SAudi Arabia women have significantly less rights than men because of the Islamic religion. The Saudi government focuses on religion whereas in Ukraine there is freedom of religion and people are free to do what they want. I think it is interesting how different people and governments treat citizens based on differences in cultures.
