Horror(Buffy episode)

Posted on July 30, 2014 in Unit 06 by dongjoon@uoregon.edu

From the Buffy episode, the aesthetic of horror is defined in the middle of the clip. The reason I chose the scene is that it involves all the principles in the short scene. When a couple kiss each other and a man take off his glasses, the camera zooms in the place where the glasses sit. The legs of glasses underlined the word ‘gentlemen’. After that the camera started to focus on calm and quiet houses and clocks. During the night time, all people fell into a sleep and strange smog came out from people’ mouths. Nothing seems to be happened but all people lost their voices and big events hit towns and all people were worried about that.

In the scene, mise-en-scene is well represented. The framing of the sequence makes people to feel nervous and creates tension that some horror scenes will be happened. Even though the characters do not give any hints about what is going to happen, smog effects and camera angles to focus on clocks with non-diegetic sounds add a horror effect. A mood music sounds makes the scenes slowly so that some unusual events will be waiting. At the end of the mood music, the vampire gathered all the smog and put in the box. The scene is changed to morning and a girl washes and came back to her room. While doing so, she met a girl who is crying. This represents that something was happened during the night. When she came back her room and tried to talk with her roommates, she could not voice out. The non-diegetic sounds which beats fast, lead audiences to feel that the unusual phenomenon happened not only the two girls but also all people in downtown. Obviously, the non-diegetic sounds lead all the scenes as characters cannot speak out any words. Their forms of acting create horror moods. By the way, diegetic sound was also presented in the clips. When all people voiced out and tried to figure out what happens, they gathered in a living room and watches news. The news explained what horror moments the people are experiencing. Also, people who lost their voice made some sounds while they were trying to voice out. Those formations of sounds and characters’ acting indicate the peak of the horror moods and shows intensity of the story. In the clips, the actors and actresses behaviors and non-diegetic sounds take most of scenes to add horror moods. The camera angles and mood sounds are really important to deliver the moods to audiences. Moreover, diegetic sounds such as explanations or small sounds created by characters’ acting explains that the scenes do not depicts a normal lifestyle.

Adornment

I attend summer classes and meet various people. Before I approach to them, I make an assumption about the people whether they are conservative, trendy, progressive or not.

Firstly, I went to Economy class on Monday and meet my professor. He wears glasses which seem to have powerful lens and has a clean skin on his face. His face seems not to have any troubles by strong sun lights. It tells me that he reads a lot of books and usually stays inside a building. He seems not to be an active person so does not feel any interest to play sports. Moreover, he wears brown shirts and shorts with sandals. He is a white man with no piercing and tattoo. His appearance tells that he is a very conservative person and follows a value that schools or parents taught. During the class, he never makes any jokes and just focuses on chapters. He is always serious on topics and tries to deliver a clear message to students. From his appearances, I can assume that he is a hardworking person who pursues his values and norms as a professor.

Secondly, I went to a restaurant and saw a person who eats food. She wore a sleeveless shirt and shorts with sandals. She had long brown hairs and wore several bracelets which a design of skull imprinted on. Her both arms were covered by tattoos which presents several facial expressions, skulls and animals. Moreover, she has piercings on her noses and tongues. She decorated herself to show her powers. From her appearances, I can assume that she is a strong person who can endure the pains from having tattoos and piercings. Her voices were big enough that gathers all attentions from other visitors in the restaurants. She did not care of any creations of noises. She seemed to be very confident on every moment but I received an impression that she would not be a professional on her job. Based on her appearance, it would be hard for me to judge what job she takes currently. Her appearance is not a normal so that I curious about her status. I respect what she did on her body but dislike the tattoo and piercings. However, she likes her tattoos and considers them as valuable marks for her identity.

Lastly, I met a girl who wears black blouses and shining shoes. She has ponytail hair styles. She seemed to receive nail care services. As soon as I saw her, I thought that she is a professional business girl. She did not have any tattoo or piercing on her arms and face. Her appearances obviously remind me to think of a character in a TV drama “News Room”. Her well designed clothes and perfectly fit into her body indicated that she has a strong confidence on her jobs and has a full of knowledge on her job. Moreover, I thought, she is a very organized person who rarely makes a mistake. She sat on a table in coffee shop and wrote something on her diary in few minutes later. My assumptions based on appearances were right. She seemed to build her values which can be seen in media as professional, through decorating herself.

By observing numerous people, I understand that everyone has different values and shows off the values through their appearances. Depending on observers’ values, a stereotype defines the person’s identity as what I did. As all people have different values and stereotypes, right or wrong answers would not be existed. All people carry out unique form of art and observers obviously interpret the art in their own ways. However, the most important thing is that the stereotype can be changed when the observer really experience the people. The appearance would not be all factors that judge a person’s identity.

Food as an art

Posted on July 30, 2014 in Unit 04 by dongjoon@uoregon.edu

It has been very ambiguous to define whether food is an art or not. Art primarily possess a huge ranges that drawing a line to distinguish arts among numerous objects. Many objects bring people to feel aesthetic reactions. Obviously, aesthetic reactions are occurred by some objects which appears to our sense. The aesthetic reactions could be a feeling of pleasures or disinterests. By tasting or smelling foods, people might get aesthetic reactions such as wonderful, beautiful and looks good like they react through observing a masterpiece. As stated in the Tefler’s essay, however, some philosophers argue about the food whether it is involved in work of art or not. On page 18, he states that “A work of art is by definition a man-made thing, even if the human involvement need consist of no more than putting a natural object in a gallery and giving it a title. […] One problem is that the phrase “work of art” can be used in either a classifying or an evaluative way.” I think food is included in the art. It does not only give an aesthetic reaction but also enables people to experience it with intensity. When I go to a restaurant, I used to hear some exclamations around the tables. By smelling the food, people expect what kinds of food will be served. Whether or not the food tastes good or bad, people react on the food. However, does bad tasty food give a rise of aesthetic reactions? As Tefler depicts in his essay, the definition of work of art seems to be a key factor to judge. In the perspective, food would be a work of art. Chefs cook ingredients or raw materials and put them on dishes with some decorations. Obviously, they deliver a valuable piece to customers. People understand what a chef intends to deliver and often take a picture and upload it to the social network sites. According to the essay, “However, Urmson’s use of the word “primarily” allows for the possibility that a work of art might be made for use as well as ornament” [Telfer, 18]. The food is served to customer to enjoy the tastes and eyes from watching beautiful plating. Those dishes are mainly made through transforming normal materials to beautiful piece of works. It apparently fits to the Dissanayake’s definition of arts, “What artists do, in their specialized and often driven way, is an exaggeration of what ordinary people also do, naturally and with enjoyment- transform the ordinary into the extra-ordinary”[Dissanayake, 25].

What is art? Assessment

Posted on July 26, 2014 in Unit 03 by dongjoon@uoregon.edu

1)

Dissanayake use the term “paleoanthropsychobiological” in order to explain her own view of “art for life’s sake”. She views that the art includes all of human history and society. Moreover, art has psychological or emotional effects. Her paleoanthropsychobiological view insists that art should be created by numerous characteristics of human nature and viewed as a traits of biological traits.

2)

Dissanayake state the “making special” on page 22 in her essay. Individuals or animals should be unique and specialized features to survive. We have heard many times in schools that we have to take specialized skills or knowledge in order to be employed or earn high incomes. The specialized skills or knowledge would be consistent with the meaning of making specials. We have to be a unique person in industry for eternal survivals. In the art forms, many unique cultures or customs are depicted by an art and the special performances or pieces of sculptures or drawings are interpreted by different people with special meanings. When people visit museum, they find different kinds of arts. That is why ‘making special’ is necessary for art.

3)

Dissanayake delivers three different theories of art in her essay. Firstly, she states about ‘Renaissance’ which represents reality in medieval time. From religious art, Renaissance focused on real world and represented accurate portrait of the situation. Secondly, she also delivers the definition of modern art. In 18th century, the subjects of art became aesthetics which focused on beauty. As it focused on beauties, the art in the era became more abstract and difficult for people to understand. The art was not reflecting the natures. Lastly, she mentioned postmodernism. From the modernism art which people have difficult to interpret, postmodernism focused on interpretation of art. In this era, the paintings reflected social issues and lamentation that the artists faced with. The social issues were different in various regions so that the postmodern arts depicted cultural portraits that people can understand and study for the era.

Life Value Assessment (Reflection)

Posted on July 26, 2014 in Unit 02 by dongjoon@uoregon.edu

My parents always remind me to have a well-organized process for studying or working. They taught me to develop my personal skills then companies will require me with high compensations. Keeping it mind, I have tried to learn something in schools. I do not care of what grades I receive but learn the process of getting a good grade. Moreover, I know that I have to reward my parents who have raised me. Currently, I cannot give them a physical reward but keep calling them and be safe while we are away each other. I try to follow the way my parents expect. These basic values have been built by the education of my parents. Also, while I lead my life, friendship has been important factor to me. It must be the most powerful supports. Friends always listen my words and give me an advice. We discuss the vision of our life and find a way to fulfill. Due to the fact, I unconsciously care my friends and respect them.

However, there is something that I could not acknowledge, enjoyment. I have faced with numerous difficulties and felt like giving up some tasks. As the tasks must be fulfilled on time, I was forced to do them rather than enjoying the works so that the results were not satisfactory. Enjoyment is really important factor to succeed. In my daily life, I feel enjoyment while I am playing games or watching some funny shows. However, that does not contribute to my personal development. For my career, I try to control my mind to feel enjoyment on my works. I believe the mind control will bring me a good motivation to get succeed. Moreover, health is very important. If I become a marketing specialist, I can adjust my knowledge into real industry with fun and enjoyment, but bad health condition will prevent me from performing my knowledge and let my parents and friends worry about. It would be no exaggeration that everything that I fulfill will be disappeared. Thus, I have to think of those five values and try to keep them.

What is art for?

Posted on July 23, 2014 in Unit 03 by dongjoon@uoregon.edu

The essay of ‘what is art for?’ explains the general trends and meanings of art. In separate eras, art has been depicted to give messages or express artists’ views on some events or world. In short, the art is an idea of expression. According to the essay, the author states that “”Disinterest” implied that viewers could appreciate any art, even the artwork of eras or cultures far removed from their own, whether or not they understood the meaning the works had for the people who made and used them” (page 18). The author states that the art is universal. This explanation is true that the art is not involved in specific trends. Even people who use different languages understand and interpret the piece of art. The interpretation could be a reflection of knowledge but in postmodernism, the art is viewed as truth and reality. Since every person has different values and interpret the art according to their beliefs. Art has been expression ideology, interpretation and life sakes over years.

Art delivers special emotions to people in forms of object or ceremonies. Sometimes, people stare at one point without any facial expression. Every one of us has experienced the moment. I used to feel the moment when I see incredible views. Art is defined an artificial work. However, if a view or some object gives a message to people, is that included in the category of art?

Value

Posted on July 23, 2014 in Unit 02 by dongjoon@uoregon.edu

From the discussion of value, I totally agree with ‘We are not driven by immutable instincts. But we might still be controlled by the influence of genes on our underlying personality or, alternatively, by peer pressure, by the relentless demands of the society in which we happen to live’

In our society, each person has different point of views on some incidents or issues. Each one of us makes a different interpretation. This is because each person has different values. While growing up, people experience various events and learn general norms of life. As stated above, the value is not created by human instincts. By leading my life, I have learnt numerous things and realized many things. Usually, famous celebrities’ biographies influenced me to build a strong value. As I admire those celebrities, I tried to follow what their thoughts. Moreover, publics respect those celebrities’ thoughts and forms a society based on them so that my values are totally influenced by the pressures of society’s creature, books and education.

However, even the influence of genes affects my personality and value; I think that each person has different situations. I believe that people should create their own way to lead their lives. If one’s value is created by social influences, people will not lead their lives in creative ways but follow someone else’s paths. Value indicates what is wrong or right, how to behave in the society, why we have to make decisions. No one controls my life and everyone has different life expectations and abilities to create a unique path for their lives. In this perspective, Is value an indicator of someone’s identity?
