Exercise Can Save Your Mind

“Benfits of Physical Activity on Mental Health”

Cody’s blog discusses the benefits exercise and physical activities have on mental health issues. Cody claim’s that those who exercise are “25% less likely to develop depression or an anxiety disorder” which are mental disorders that are becoming much more frequent in today’s rushed society. I found it interesting that natural remedy for depression is just getting up and getting active. It seems so simple, almost as if people just promised themselves staying active for at least 60 minutes a day, not even 5% of their day, they could put themselves at less risk for developing depression.

Cody also shows how exercise during youth can help prevent ADHD. It makes sense that the more outlets a child has to get out their excess energy, such as at recess or in sports, the more likely they will be able to focus when needed to, like in the classroom.

After reading what Cody has to say in his blog, it is clear that exercise is crucial for a person’s wellbeing. It seems as if our society is putting less emphasis on the importance of being active, which can be seen in both the adult generation and the youth one as well. Although we live in a society that is “go-go-go” from the morning we wake up until we go back to bed, it is important we do not forget about putting aside a small fraction of our time each day towards being active. From personal experiences, being an athlete myself since I was a small child, I recognize how different my day is when I am idle. When I take a few days off from working out, I notice that my performance in the classroom weakens because I begin to drift in and out of focusing on what curriculum is being taught. Also, when I have a stressful day, exercise is the best way for me to de-stress, while realigning my emotions.

Although we live in a society that is “go-go-go” from that first alarm ring in the morning until we lay our heads back down on our pillows at night, it is important we do not forget about putting aside a small fraction of our time each day towards being active. Because if we keep forgetting to stay active, obesity will increase, as well as mental health disorders: health problems that have a natural prescription that can be prevented all because of exercise.
