Attempting to Challenge the Process

My group, Business As Usual, had its original project proposal idea of “textbook caps” nixed for focusing 1) on too broad of an issue, and 2) for being a solution as opposed to a need. After our initial idea fell through we seemed to flounder around for the better part of class passing around new topics for focus. But as we did the first time, we became stuck in finding specific solutions as opposed finding a need to address in our needs statement. Despite noticing that we had gotten quite off track, I hesitated jumping in and questioning the direction we were headed in. But as I noticed the groups around us making headway in their own needs statement, I decided to step up and challenge the solutions we had been brainstorming and instead suggested we think of what we feel is lacking in our education. In doing so, I am making progress in my goal to “challenge the process.” My challenge in addition to the groups realization that we were approaching our project from the wrong direction on left us on a clearer path with a need statement. This situation in particular has really shown the need for me to continue to challenge the process, as it obviously is effective and allows the group to complete the things we need to accurately. I think that even small steps like these will help me become a stronger and more effective leader, and team member. Though we still may have some refining to do, I think that we are finally headed in the right direction and I have now seen first hand how important challenging the process can be, even for something that seems so small.
