1. This video shows Daniel Buren’s own explanation of his exhibition Monumenta of 2012 and Les Deux Plateux. Although he uses stripes in all of his works, he explains how he didn’t invent the stripes and they are used as a generic tool. By using the space provided, he explains how he created each work specifically for the site to fill the space and added the mirrors to create a new perspective. This is also seen in his Les Deux Plateux, as he fills the space of the courtyard with his columns. This video compares two of his most iconic exhibitions and installations, both in Paris, and can be clearly compared as they both occupy space and create perspective through dimension and form.

2. This video shows Buren’s two installations at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The first, titled 20 diamonds covers the facade of the museums windows in colored light filters. Depending on weather and light, the inside and outside landscape are effectively changed by color. The interior exhibition titled Catch as Catch Can consists of a ceiling of color tinted windows as well as stripe framed mirrors. This creates an environment that each individual is acted and acted upon by the work through reflecting and refracting light and architecture.

3. This video shows all aspects of Architecture, Contre-Architecture: Transposition of 2010-2011 for MUDAM in Luxembourg. Buren installed an architectural shape to reflect the atrium of the Grand Hall, creating architecture within architecture. With the addition of colored film over alternating parts of the form, the light from the ceiling not only refracts through its own form but the additional architecture as well. This creates the reflection and refraction of shapes, colors and shadows that are contingent on the environment that is happening at that moment in time. This is seen in the video as it shows many perspectives and lighting that create a new environment every time you visit.

4. This video is the full footage of Louis Vuitton’s runway show in Paris Fashion Week that Buren inspired and created the set for. As seen in the video, the escalators have his classic strips on them sectioned off on certain parts. This shows the stripes appearing and disappearing as the escalator steps rotate around. The juxtaposition of Buren’s set with the atmosphere and clothes create a balanced environment. This video shows the movement needed to fully grasp the striped escalators that Buren created.

5. This video shows Buren’s Cabane Eclatee of 1989 shown at Art Cologne in 2013. It shows one of Buren’s work that has remained 30 years later after being bought, taken apart and put back together in different locations. This essentially takes away from Buren’s site-specific intention of his work as this piece has been moved to different galleries. It also shows the mere size of this work, and the ability for visitors to interact and respond to his work.
