Lesson Agenda
Rationale or learning progression – How does this lesson connect with prior lessons and/or prior knowledge of students? What are you trying to accomplish in this lesson? How does the lesson “flow” together?

This lesson will connect the past lessons and help students understand potential harm when using the internet. Each lesson before has its own set of potential consequences, so this lesson will help tie the overarching idea of possible consequences together.

Beginning the lesson // ESTIMATED TIME: 10 MINUTES

  • Introduce today’s lesson and mention that it’s on consequences of the internet
  • Transition into group discussion: Ask students ways that people are unsafe on the internet and ask what possible consequences might be. Share as a group (5mins)
  • Introduce the specific topics of possible internet consequences:
    • Public profiles
    • Using public computers for personal work/use
    • Giving out personal information on websites (gaming websites, shopping online etc)
  • Move back into group discussion and ask students possible consequences for each of those topics (5mins)

Adaptations for student support: Students who need more support will be given the directions be asked to sit in the back highlighting or helping organize the materials that will be given to the students.

Middle of the lesson (Small Group/Individual Work/Whole Class Discussion)

  • Teacher will make a full fake profile for Facebook and email attached to it
  • Students will be put into pairs or groups of three and will be given access to the fake Facebook and email (30mins)
    • Their task is to look around on the accounts and gather as much personal information on the profile as possible. They will write down what they find
  • After looking around, everyone will come back together as a class and share their findings group by group
  • Then transition into questions: (15mins)
    • Why is it potentially harmful for people to know your ______? What might happen if someone gets access to these things? (ex: credit card info, address, personal messages etc)
    • How will this make you think twice about what you post and share online? What steps will you take to improve your online security?
    • What was the most surprising piece of information you found on the fake profiles?

Adaptations for student support: Students who need more support will be given an assignment that will align with their needs. Whether it’s something more hands on or bigger font, accommodations will be met.

End of the lesson:

Assessing for understanding:

  • Journal about what they learned about consequences of the internet (15mins)
  • Tell students to compile all their journals for the week and be ready to share them with peers/the class the following week

Adaptations for student support: Students who need more support will be given an assignment that will align with their needs. Whether it’s something more hands on or bigger font, accommodations will be met.
