Lesson Agenda
Rationale or learning progression – How does this lesson connect with prior lessons and/or prior knowledge of students? What are you trying to accomplish in this lesson? How does the lesson “flow” together?

After students learn internet responsibility and the various aspects of that it will allow them to better understand the ideas and its benefits

Beginning the lesson (10 Minutes)

We will start our lesson with the students in small groups (3-4 each) and discuss and define words like

1. Password/Passcode

2. Secure

3. Internet responsibility (should know since that was yesterday’s lesson)

4. Hack

This should take students about 10 minutes.

Working in groups will allow the students to learn collaborative working skills. I will also allow them to test their prior knowledge and possibly change their understanding based on what their peers know.

Adaptations for student support: Students who may be blind or deaf will rely on their groups to help transmit the information as needed. If additional support is needed the teacher or student aid can assist.

Middle of the lesson (Small Group/Individual Work/Whole Class Discussion) (35 Minutes)

From here students will present their ideas to the class. After this I will reveal the meaning to these words within the context of the lesson plan.

After that I will ask students to raise their hand if they have any password protected online accounts (such as Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, school account etc..) I will ask them to share what they use these accounts for if they would like. I would like to see how active the students are online and if they know if their information is secure or not.

From here I will have students get into their original groups and grab a computer from our laptop cart. I will direct them to the link

http://www.passwordmeter.com/

The students can spend 20 minutes testing their passwords and creating new ones. I want the students to compile a list of examples that came out of 100% secure (students will not share their own passwords within groups or to the whole class) Students can also search their own names on google if they would like. This may or may not reveal information that they thought was secure. Students will now go plug their laptops back into the cart and sit back into their seat.

I will then show the students a list I’ve made of passwords that are at 100% strength, I want them to dissect them and figure out what made them 100% (i.e. use of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters)

I will then ask students why they feel password security is important. I will show them just how easy it is to see someone’s information online who you don’t know. (I will make a fake Facebook for our class and upload stock photos. I will then search the Facebook page and show students how easy it is to see without knowing them)

Adaptations for student support:  Students who may be blind or deaf will rely on their groups to help transmit the information as needed. If additional support is needed the teacher or student aid can assist.

End of the lesson: (15 minutes)

I will ask students what they have learned within todays lesson and have them reflect within their journals. They will be writing another paragraph for their essays. If they need additional help for how to guide their writing, they can answer these questions.

1. What is Password Security?

2. Why is it important?

3. How can people improve it?

Students will also have the option to write at their desk or talk in a small group about the content taught to clarify anything for the first 5 minutes and then move to independent writing.

Assessing for understanding: From the students written responses I will be able to see how well each student understand the material discussed in today’s class.
