Meet OPDR’s Research Assistant: Jeramy Card

Oregon Partnership for Disaster ResilienceAbout: I am a father of four, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and employee of Lane Transit District (LTD) for the past nine years.

Alias:  “J”

Where were you born and where do you call home? I was born in Santa Rosa, CA but after living here 15 years, I call Eugene home.

In which graduate program are you enrolled? I am in the Master of Community and Regional Planning program and will be finishing up my Oregon Leadership in Sustainability Master Certificate this year.

What Community Service Center program(s) are you working with? I am assisting Oregon Partnership for Disaster Resilience (OPDR) with a North Coast Resilience project funded by a grant through the Department of Land Conservation. The project has been working with the coastal communities of Gearhart, Seaside, and Cannon Beach to determine benchmarks for community resilience to emergency and disaster events such as tsunamis and earthquakes. A system for evaluation of each community’s current conditions will be devised to help the partner communities establish a baseline and work to become more resilient in the face of emergencies.

What are some of the outcomes are you hoping to gain when your project ends?  Greater knowledge of the community planning process, emergency management structures and systems, and resilience. I hope to gain skills in survey methodology/analysis and research.

How does your involvement with the Community Service Center relate to or inform your education? I am very interested in working in the emergency management field in the realm of community planning. My hope is to gain practical and technical experience working with communities and agencies in the emergency management field.

What advice would you give to your younger self just beginning the CSC program? Start younger and find your passion early! At 36, I feel like I’m getting a late start but still very excited to be learning and pursuing a new career.

Where can we ‘cyber-stalk’ you?
