WHO ARE WE?

MEET OUR TEAM

Allison Kirkpatrick

I am a second-year student at the University of Oregon, studying both educational foundations  and spanish, and am aspiring to be a bilingual elementary school educator. As a future educator, I strive to provide students with an intricately connected, well rounded and student lededucational experience that allows them to feel confident in their learning abilities while inspiring them to push past limits and exceed their own expectations. I plan to teach with cultures, communities, and relationships always on the mind, in order to create an inclusive, diverse, and open classroom where my students can be vulnerable, take chances, make mistakes, and grow as people, not just students. I know that this “Computing the Arts” Unit will not only help expand students technological, computing, and artistic knowledge, but provide them with confidence to pursue these subjects deeper later on in their educational careers.

Katie Jewel

I am a Junior at the University of Oregon’s Educational Foundations undergraduate program. As a future educator, I am always interested in finding ways that I can encourage my prospective students to discover their creativity. I believe that arts education and computer science are two aspects of the educational experience that are currently underrepresented in school curriculums. I think that just like becoming a great artist takes time and dedication, so does coding! I love that our ‘Computing the Arts’ Unit incorporates helps students as young as second grade begin to see themselves as coders, artists, and computational thinkers. The younger we can start kids working on these skills the more competent they will be as creators, not just consumers of technology.

Caitlin Lawson

I am a Junior at the University of Oregon and majoring in Educational Foundations. I grew up in Southern California before moving to Oregon to pursue my teaching career. The Computing the Arts curriculum has a special place in my heart due to the creative nature of the curriculum. For the past eleven years of my life I have played the flute in various ensembles and have always loved to create with different mediums of art. From photography, to drawing, to painting, I have always loved to see what I can create to express myself. In creating an arts based curriculum with my team I hope that another child is able to find their true passion and creative outlet through art.

Andy Terhune

I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. I currently work at the Co-Op Family center with 1-2 year olds. I plan on either being a 2nd or 5th grade teacher and
plan on integrating music and art into various aspects of my future classrooms. I spend my free time creating and playing music and hiking through Oregon. Our Computing the Arts project is just the beginning to many possibilities in mixing computer and art skills.

Janey Willis

I am an Oregon native and in addition to being an Educational Foundations major I am also a legal studies minor hoping to teach between 2nd and 5th grade.  I love reading, writing and crafting and hope to foster creativity in my future classroom just as much as I would support core skills. The idea of computing the arts is something combines my passion for a creativity with relevant life skills in today’s life that will hopefully give students a variety of experiences and skills. I am so excited to share    this curriculum with you!
