A group representing schools across the state would like to see its draft legislation add climate education throughout grade levels and core classes.

Nye and Rodriguez are part of a statewide group of students and teachers pushing for more education on climate and sustainability, including place-based lessons schools can tailor to a community’s specific issues. The group, Oregon Educators for Climate Education, includes teachers from across the state.

“In Oregon, every single region and even micro-region has different issues they’re facing,” said group member and University of Oregon professor Sarah Stapleton.

More than four years ago, Karrie Walters saw a need to make diagnostic services more accessible in Eugene. She decided to address the problem herself by launching a comprehensive diagnostic clinical service in 2019 to assess a range of learning, attention and developmental disorders.

Walters directs the Comprehensive Diagnostic Assessment Clinic, one of the clinical service lines offered within the HEDCO Clinic at the UO’s College of Education. The center evaluates for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and learning disabilities including dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia. Services are available to children age 7 or older, adolescents, college students and adults. 

The Tribe’s Education Department honored 85 Tribal members who graduated from eighth grade through earning doctorate degrees during a graduation celebration held Thursday, July 7, at Spirit Mountain Casino.

Education Department Director Angela Fasana welcomed attendees and Tribal Council Secretary Michael Langley gave the invocation.

Following a dinner, University of Oregon graduate Kayla Kneeland gave the keynote speech before graduates were honor.

Four faculty and staff members are being recognized for their work by the Division of Graduate Studies.  

Cheri Smith, Maile Hutterer, Jerry Rosiek and Kayla Robinson were selected as winners of the 2022 Graduate Education Excellence Awards. 

Rosiek, a professor of education studies in the College of Education, won the Excellence Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentorship. He said he was moved reading the nomination letters students submitted. 

NEA-Retired also awarded five aspiring educators with Jack Kinnaman Memorial Scholarships. Established in honor of a former NEA-Retired vice president, the award helps NEA Aspiring Educators members fulfill their dream of becoming teachers. This year, thanks to the generosity of NEA-Retired members, the amount of the scholarship increased from $2,500 to $3,500 per student.

Hannah St. Clair, COE student, was awarded a scholarship.

Momentum is building as the University of Oregon Portland prepares to move to a new campus in northeast Portland next summer.

With the purchase of the new property finalized, the university is ramping up preparations to welcome students to the campus in fall 2023. The UO Portland campus will be home to the new Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health and current UO academic and research programs.

Buena’s football team played one of the toughest schedules in Arizona last season and had the second toughest schedule in Southern Arizona.
