Edith Green, BA ’39 (English, education) was the second woman from Oregon to be elected to the US House of Representatives. She served in Congress from 1955 to 1974 representing Oregon’s 3rd District. During that time, she championed several issues related to education and gender equality legislation. Green was instrumental in the passage of the Equal Pay Act of 1963. Also, in 1972, she heavily contributed to passing the Higher Education Acts of 1965 and 1972, also known as Title IX.
