On March 7th, 2019, Timberly and Hana went to test Lesson 1 of Code Name Slime to a second-grade class so we can see if it needs work. We also let them make slime at the end of the class. Here are some pictures we took in the classroom!
We started off with setting up the classroom IPads onto our scratch program and then letting the kids use it. If they had questions, we went around to answer them but overall they seemed to understand what the game was asking.
The screen will let the kids know if the amount of borax water they used was good or bad.
After they created slime on the scratch program, we instructed them to take a look at the recipe they made on the program, and use the given paper blocks to copy the recipe.
Originally we were going to have them use the recipe blocks to create their own slime step by step, but we knew we wouldn’t have time since we only had an hour to do so. Instead, Timberly premade slimes of different colors, and we let them play and keep it. Hana brought beads for the kids to add into the slime if they wanted to.
Student Feedback after Test: On the scratch program, it wasn’t clear for some students where the glue was so we will need to make it more visible by putting a glue picture/label. The color of paper blocks (purple) compared to the scratch program blocks (orange) confused some the students, so edited the paper blocks more accurately. As for the lesson plan sheets we created, we needed to include our website on the bottom of the page for reference as well as the CSTA standards.
Nikole also did a test with her daycare students! She was able to run through lessons 1-5. Her students were very engaged in working with the blocks and were able to demonstrate their understanding quickly.
