COACh: Leadership and Advanced Negotiations Skills

The Academic Leadership seminar is designed for university faculty or other academic administrators who are anticipating, considering or fulfilling academic leadership roles. The Advanced negotiations section builds on the basics of negotiations and adds a leadership assessment, as well as advanced skills in negotiating difficult conversations.
The workshop includes:
- Admired leaders’ characteristics
- Research findings on leadership characteristics
- Challenges for women as leaders
- Differences between Leadership and Management
- Decision-making strategies
- Influence techniques
- Questioning and Listening Skills
- Leading Change
- Leadership Tools: Selecting a high performance team and giving feedback
- Case study practice of leadership skills
Participants will also learn how to differentiate types of leadership approaches to change, identify the stages of resistance to change, and learn how to use their network in leading change. The group will be given a model for how to forming a high performance task force to deal with challenging issues, as well as processes for giving feedback.
Participants practice a number of skills to strengthen understanding of the techniques above. As a final exercise, volunteer participants practice a case study. If time permits, participants are able to select and practice cases relevant to leadership challenges they face. Participants view, coach and discuss the results.
