Background

I’ve been intrigued by earthquakes since I was a young girl, and always knew that someday I wanted to become a seismologist. As a young adult, still fascinated, I believed this path was just a dream and instead fell into an 11-year medical career before eventually deciding to return to school in pursuit of my dream career.

As a female, non-traditional, first-generation student trying to pave my path into a STEM field, I knew graduate school was a long-shot, so I dedicated all of my spare time to becoming involved in undergraduate research in hopes I could learn the valuable skills needed to set me apart from other applicants. It was a rough road, but well worth the effort, as I was graciously accepted by the University of Oregon to become their next Geophysics Ph.D. student in Fall, 2023.

My dream is alive, and I encourage others to pursue theirs as well. Never be afraid to go after something you want. With passion and determination, the future is yours to take!

  1. Hello Charity,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Leyla Namazie. I am a physical scientist/intern with the US Geological Survey’s Earthquake Science Center at Moffett Field. My supervisor, Dr. Walter Mooney, referred me to you after he saw your poster showing HVSR data from Willamette Valley at SSA last week. I just recently began a project that might benefit from HVSR, and I would love to get more insight on how it is being applied today. Since my research group does not have experience with HVSR, I am hoping to connect with other students who are using the method. Do you have availability in the next few weeks for a short Zoom call to chat more about it? Let me know! I am excited to learn more.

    Best regards,
    Leyla Namazie
