Unit 05 Adornment

The first person who I watched is a man who was sitting on the 1st floor in Lillis. I think he is a gentleman and he must study hard because of his dress and behavior. He wore a red plaid shirt and yellow skinny short pants with a pair of yellow casual footwear. Generally, I think people who with this kind of casual dress (plaid shirt and skinny pants) must be gentleman. Most of American men like to wear sportive or simple designed clothes, but his dress is casual and designed. In the daily life, I believe he would not say dirty words and is very respectful to other people. In addition, he was looking the textbook on the seat that near the classroom when I watching him. I guess he was waiting to the next class. He used the waiting time to read textbook so I think he usually studied hard and has a good performance on exams. In short, in my values and beliefs, a person who wears plaid shirt and skinny pants usually is a gentleman, and the person who read textbook on the seat where near the classroom usually study hard.

The second person who I observed is a Chinese girl who was walking in the Lillis. I think this girl is very rich and very concerned about her appearance due to her very fashionable dress. She wore a leopard print short skirt with a pair of silver high-heeled shoes. I think she is very confident because of the leopard print short skirt. In my opinion, only the person who is confident would dress the leopard print clothes. In addition, she took a Louis Vuitton’s bag. So I think she is rich and confident based on the leopard print and LV’s bag. I saw her face with heavy makeup so I think she pay much attention on the appearance. I also believe her performance on study is not good. In my values and beliefs, the woman who take leopard print and luxury adornment is rich and heavy makeup means she very concern about appearance, rich students usually cannot have a good performance on studying.

The third person who I watched is a man who was sitting in the lobby of Lillis. I believe he is a person who pursue non-mainstream culture and do not care others’ opinions of himself. He was wearing a loose dark green t-shirt and baggy jeans with sport shoes. The most impressive adornments are the full tattoo on his arms and the nose piercing. These two kinds of adornments are not mainstream culture and I think a person who with these adornments must do not care others’ eyes because he know his adornments will attract people’s attention. I also believe he want to be distinctive with ordinary people based on his adornments. He looks like South American, and those kinds of unique adornments normally are popular in the South America in my impression because tattoos come from tribal culture. Overall, in my values and beliefs, a person who pursue the non-mainstream culture generally want to be distinctive and do not care about others’ eyes to himself.

  1. Interesting post. I agree that it’s true that we can tell a lot by what a person wears, their accessories, and how they carry themselves. I’m not sure if I could tell whether someone is doing well in school by this, though. I know that I have had some classmates that I’ve pre-judged because they obviously had money (expensive clothes, expensive car, etc), but they actually are very good, hard working students. I’m wondering if it has been your experience that the more money a student has, the less important school is to them? I’m sure that there is a lot of family pressure on the student to do well, but I guess that doesn’t mean they always do.

I have some additional thoughts on the man with the tattooed arm and pierced nose. I think when teens get body adornments done, it is often out of a bit of rebelliousness and an attempt to be different, “distinctive”, and of often to distance themselves from their families in an attempt to create their own identity. Consequently, when they get older, I don’t believe it’s so much that he or she doesn’t care about how others see them. I think it’s more of a way of expressing some facet about her or his personality, in a similar manner to us picking out an item of clothing that represents our style. It’s just permanent rather than temporary, which may present another set of problems down the line. Both of my daughters have tattoos. Their first ones were done when they were quite young and it was actually a novel thing to do back then. Now they choose carefully and design tattoos that are an expression of themselves. Best to you!

  2. Hi! There!
I really like your description about your observation, because it is really in detailed, and I feel really enjoyed when I read through your post about how you analyze people’s dressing. I found it is interesting that you were saying “in my values and beliefs, the woman who take leopard print and luxury adornment is rich and heavy makeup means she very concern about appearance, rich students usually cannot have a good performance on studying”. I found it is a bias argument but in fact, lots of my friend who are rich and love to buy luxury cloth do care about their grade. Choosing what to wear is just a personal preference; maybe it is not appropriate to judge someone just based on their appearance.
But in general, really nice post!
