Unit 06 Enjoying Horror Discussion

This Buffy episode is really interesting and horrific. Mise-en-scene is an importance part for horror video. For the mise-en-scene, my chosen example was happened in 1:54. At that time, the man was kissing Buffy but the screen gradually become dark and suddenly the classroom that in the background become empty except the man and Buffy. I feel confused and scared because I did not know why the classroom becomes empty suddenly. This mise-en-scene contributes to the aesthetic of horror for the video because it implies audiences that there are some horrific things would happen.

I choose the example of non-diegetic sound was happened in 2:40. At that time, Buffy was looking at the small girl and then the man touch her shoulder from behind so that Buffy was shocked. Then a terrifying voice suddenly appeared to make Buffy return to the class. It is a great example of non-diegetic sound because its source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action. This terrifying voice contributes to the aesthetic of horror for the video because it not only brings Buffy return to the class but also brings the audiences return to the class. When I looking it, I was thinking who the small girl is and why she singing then suddenly the terrifying voice scared me and interrupted my thinking.

For the diegetic sound, the example that I choose was happened in 13:25. At that silent night, the screen increasing focus on the church clock and then appeared the voice of clock gears. It is the diegetic sound because its source is the church clock which is visible on the screen. I choose it because this voice makes me scared. I do not know what will appear next along with the clock voice. I think this example contributes to the aesthetic of horror for the video because it brings a kind of uncertainty to audiences and makes people feel horrific.

  1. Nice job, I think you find very good examples to present diegetic sound, non- diegetic sound and mise-en-scen. And I think we chose similar examples. I totally agree with your diegetic sound and non- diegetic sound examples. However, I just have a different idea of mise-en-scen example, because I think you can supplement some other aspects of mise-en-scen. According to the Aesthetics of Horror Presentation, all of costumes, lighting and actors’ performance, figure expression, movement, setting. I think your mise-en-scen example is excellent, but I just want to say not only this example. Your example is a part of mise-en-scen. Maybe you can provide other examples such as actor’s make up; there are many vampires or zombies in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They have very hideous facial expressions that make the movie horror. In addition, you can say many horror environment is at night. Night, moonlight, and dark environment are contributing the aesthetic of horror.

  2. Hello Chan, you did really a good job on catching the points of mise-en-scene, non-diegetic sound and diegetic sound. And by the way I choose the same example as you did on non-diegetic sound and diegetic sound. I also think these examples contributes to the aesthetic of horror. Carroll indicates “that of explaining the way in which the artistic presentation of normally aversive events and objects can give rise to pleasure or can compel our interests.” (P.276) In the film industry, audiences need that horror element in the movie not only it can attract viewers by some points, but it could push the story line and deep peoples’ emotions in a way. And mise-en-scene, non-diegetic sound and diegetic sound are the techniques to present the aesthetic of horror. However I do confuse about your mise-en-scene example, I think that scene is not strong enough to present the aesthetic of horror, just personal opinion.
