Capturing cool people doing cool things.
I worked on two different photo packages as an introduction to photojournalism.
I photographed Dat Nguyen, a close friend of mine. We went on a skiing trip together with a group of friends and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to shoot a new package. I especially love the establishment and portrait shots.
The second set of photos is of Anna Elder, who was actually the first subject I took photos of. I didn’t know Elder prior to shooting her; a mutual friend introduced us. She’s pretty badass.
- Charlie Nguyen, 19, spends a Friday night skiing at Hoodoo Ski Area. University of Oregon offers discounted tickets for students at this ski location.
- “Skiing is one of my favorite ways to unwind after a long, stressful week,” Nguyen said. “Even though I’m not the best, I have a lot of fun.”
- Nguyen is about to go down the Three Creeks slope as a warm-up before hitting the harder slopes.
- Nguyen buckles his boots before going down a slope. “I rent my skis and boots from Berg’s in Eugene. They have the best deals.”
- Nguyen “carves”; a technique used to slow down. “Carving was a little tough for me to figure out at first, but I feel pretty cool now that I’ve got it down.”
- From left to right, Nico Stovall, Jacob Drouin and Anna Edler, all 20, in front of the construction site at Hayward Field, a popular spot for skateboarders at the University of Oregon. The three gathered to practice tricks on a Thursday evening after a day of classes.
- Elder takes a break from practicing and watches Stovall and Drouin. “I love skating with these guys. They help me out with new tricks without being condescending,” Edler said.
- Edler performs a kickflip.
- “I got into skating during the pandemic because there was nothing better to do. It’s been my favorite way to pass time,” Elder said. The bandaids on Edler’s fingers come from practicing rock climbing, another hobby of hers.
- Edler performs a “front shuv”.
