Remix Discussion

“We made mixed tape, they remixed music. We watched TV, they made TV. It is technologies that made them different” stated by Lawrence Lessig in his TedTalk, “Laws that chock creativity” describing people in old generation and new generation as copyright can have a lot of effects on new generations if we still have this copyright law that still hold our creativity back.In the modern society copyright plays as a law so that no one can copy one’s idea that have copyrighted. Copyright has been regulated so that ideas that have been created by individual cannot be copied and said that they create the idea or in another word stealing someone’s creation. This would include everything such as songs, artwork, movies, names (titles) and etc.

In my opinion, by having copyright can create fear that makes people or new generation too afraid to create or build something new as they are afraid that they will get sued by the copyright law. This would limit opportunities and chances for something brighter and more creative to be created. Or even taking clips or songs to make their own video clips or “Remixing” as mentioned from TedTalk by Lawrence Lessig. Moreover, each content should be labelled so that people can know that which content can be used commercially or non-commercially.

I believe that this copyright law should be changed or weaken so that people will have more courage and opportunities to create more creativities or even a remix video clips. “people taking other’s content in wholesale and distributing it without the permission of the copyright owner, I’m talking about people taking and re-creating using other people’s content using digital technologies to see thing differently” said by Lawrence in his TedTalk. I believe that using parts of other’s idea to create your own work in other context is not stealing. However, copyright law should stand if the whole content is used by others without permission so that there would be no stealing.

  1. I totally agree about your idea, I feel the same that copyright regulation would obstruct the creativity. Because of the copyright regulation, people will concern about what they created is going to relate to others idea or not. So people afraid about to explore new ideas and expand from old ideas, which is disadvantage of development. I think the copyright regulation should be revised. So it could both protect the original author, and the creator. Since the creator don’t use the copyright material for profit, copyright regulation should let them use those material for free. Therefore, people might have more creativity, and more beneficial for human kind.

  2. I agree that copyright laws and regulations should be “weakened” because it doesn’t allow for people to be as creative as they can without fear that their copying someones original work. In the TedTalk he showed clips of anime cartoons with music and it was evident that it wasn’t the same of what the original work must have been, but there are probably people out there that would think it’s it would be copying and that fear can interfere with their creativity. I also agree with the fact that people shouldn’t just copy someones work, but there should be some compromise on what is okay. I feel like many of the copyright regulations could be revised to guarantee that people can be creative while also protecting artists who’s work won’t just be blatantly copied.
