The first video is the original song with Justin Bieber and the second video is a remixed cover by a newer artist, Ember Island.

Reflection

I believe the remix of Where Are U Now is a completely different work of art than the original. It has an even greater spiritual, artistic vibe and uses only the original lyrics, otherwise the voice, the beat, the acoustics are all unique. I think this is a great example of why the remix culture can produce art because it shows the creativity artists exemplify when using someone else’s work. It can take just as much creativity to remix a song as it does to write one. In this example, Ember Island acknowledged that this was a remixed cover of the original song; the musical group did not break copy write laws. According to Larry Lessig, stricter copy write laws would prevent such remixes and music expressions to be created. I believe he would agree that Ember Island’s remix is different enough from the original to be considered exceptionally unique.

The reading by Larry Lessig also helps prove that our objectives were reached. He examines the “read-write” culture versus the “read-only” culture. RO relates to our copy write laws and how they support ownership by the original artist. RW relates to the remix culture and “invites and response” (p. 85) from the audience. This reading truly describes the dilemma many artists and writers are in today. Similar to the previous section on technology, remixing comes with technology. The more technologically advanced we get, the more we can change, recreate, or remix art. As I said in my original post, I support remixing.

Future

Because I am a fan of remixes, I know I will more often now be comparing remixes to its original form. I will be more analytical of the similarities and differences.
