In a place characterized by constant motion, sometimes it is nice to pause for a moment.

To me, this image attempts to distill some of the more poignant visual moments in PDX at large. The urban landscape is dense and information-rich, constantly changing as you move through it. Being more of a rural citizen myself, the city can seem cacophonous and overwhelming at times. It’s moments such as these in the image that help me make sense of the place, and give the city a sense of place. As such, I think it is important to try to create these memorable moments wherever possible, to help people identify with and make sense of their place in the city. These moments can be created in a variety of ways, from long view vistas to lovely sitting places. Local/historical landmarks and people places also fit the bill. Memorable places and views imprint on people and bring a degree of relatability and a sense of ownership, or at least belonging.
