Urban-Grove……MICRO Bio-structure experiment…..

Precedent

MICRO Bio-structure project was great opportunity to explore the connections between surrounding nature and built environment.  Even we have gathered huge amount of scientific knowledge today, nature still holds some secretes within it and we need to explore them.

For thesis project at South Waterfront I was looking for particular organism, which will inspire me to design sustainable built environment and strategies. While exploring different organisms, I discovered about mangroves, which are not only self sustainable, but also help, other organisms in some or other way. Through this exploration and inspiration, I designed module for outdoor classroom which can also be served as community gathering space along the river.  My design included number of arches forming harmonious but complex structure with sculptural value.

While looking at other projects in my studio, I realized mimicking form for organism is not the only way to get inspired. Some of my classmate did excellent job in translating bio-mimetic strategies in their project. In future, I would like to explore more sustainable strategies by using mangroves as inspiration. I would also like to take one step back and think of implementation in more abstract but yet realistic fashion. I will also explore structural and enclosure system for the form I have created to make my thesis more realistic.
