Overall, the review went very well and there was great interest in the concept of using algae, as a facade and sustainable system. (The diagram of the system is directly above) The system works by the people residing in the building providing CO2 & grey water to the algae panels and in turn the panels produce oils to heat and energy, while at the same time filtering grey water for flushing use. The panels would also act as a partial shading device and so it would be a very efficient system. The comments on the seasonal storm water system were positive as well.
There was much hesitation on the idea of reusing shipping containers in my building design, but that may have been because the shipping container layout is still in process and I was not able to convey the information needed about it. To progress from this point, I must really figure out the shipping container units/system and how it truly integrates with not only the building design but the overarching concept. The reason I feel so strongly about using shipping containers is that they are very strong structurally and it is more sustainable to reuse something, rather than go with a new product/material because of embodied energy. Another benefit of using shipping containers in the design is that there is a shipping container terminal located just 6.1 miles away from my site and so it is an easy resource to acquire. Not only do I want to reuse shipping containers, but I also want to reuse windows and railings, which could be obtained from the Rebuilding Center, located 2.1 miles away from my site. I am trying to reuse as much material as possible because I have always seen Portland as a place where some peoples’ junk becomes other peoples’ treasures. This building should embody adapting something into something else.
