Friday’s Critque

This first scheme is all about creating a center of gathering space and activity.

This is the second scheme, which focuses on the residential tower being a “signifier” of a transition to the Lloyd district and City Center.

Through the critique I had on Friday, I learned that the Lloyd is a very problematic area and has a lot of issues.  In fact, it has more issues than I could have imagined and thus I should take a concentration to focus on to make my project stronger instead of trying to tackle everything.  A few examples of possible focus are:  helping there be more of a presence of an entrance to Lloyd/Lloyd Center Mall and helping Holladay Park become a great urban park.  Another remark that I received to help with my design intent is to design for the Lloyd that I want there to be and not the Lloyd there is now because of how much it lacks.  Therefore, I might design for a master plan of the site or create a master plan myself.

As for my own thoughts, I still want to focus on public transportation (as a means of changing an unhealthy habit), but also intertwine that with changing the focus of the Lloyd district from the mall to the park.  The park is very lacking and has the great potential of becoming a great urban space.  The Lloyd mall and its interior focus is one of the main issues of the Lloyd and the shear size of the structure amplifies the problem.  A possible remedy is to alter the mall to have shops that face the street and begin to create a front of the building (something it does not have).  Currently, there are many ideas flowing through my mind and only time will reveal the outcome of all this thinking.
