I find bioluminescence very intriguing. An important aspect of my Hollywood Blvd thesis site is signage. The city of Hollywood has laid out a signage plan to identify critical areas for wayfinding, which includes my site. I want to explore ideas of incorporating the signage into the building skin, much like in bioluminescence. This will be important in attracting people to the film and entertainment museum as well as possible events within the building. I think it would be a unique way to interact with the street front, as people walk by the surface would change and adapt. Movement and projection are critical when experiencing film. As the film industry continues to advance with 3D movies and television, I believe that an interactive and adaptive building skin would be an innovative strategy to enliven the street front and reflect the entertainment industry that defines Hollywood.
These youtube videos show bioluminescence as a strategy of attraction. Creatures use bioluminescence to attract prey, potential mates, and also as a distraction to serve as a defense mechanism. Obviously, these strategies only work at night or deep below the oceans surface where light cannot penetrate. This is also key to Hollywood’s night life and entertainment character.
