In this weeks reading we take a look at human values and how a martian from a different planet would view our society’s values. Unpredictability is commonly brought up throughout the reading. Our society has many unpredictable and some ridiculous behaviors that cannot be understood by everyone. We all have our own values which make each one of us unique, nobody agrees on everything which is why I believe we are a functioning society. In his essay, Lewis describes an unpredictable and unique belief by a wealthy Hostess. “The dinner parties she is organizing, hosted by the most socially prominent families at their opulent private estates as a benefit for the local Boys’ Club, will undoubtedly be a success because God is “cochairing” the event with her” (Lewis 1). Take this as you may, ignorant, naive, faithful, etc. However it is a clear and eye opening example as what the humans on planet Earth see as values. It is common for our people to have a different sense of the word “value” and what it means to have “values”. Do we really have a choice over what we value? Or is it already predetermined in our genes? One must first answer this question before they decide whether they truly value something or not. Values can also be tiered in my opinion. A person may value food, but they will value the beliefs of their religion more. The beliefs of a religion have more impact on your life than the foods you prefer over others. So why are we judging a wealthy hostess for doing something good for her community and showing her worship for God? Is it because we find her to be ignorant? Or is it because we value the money and popularity she obtains for making such comments and creating such an event? Values can have many meanings and their are many types of human values in my opinion. Person values, religious values, ideological values, we all base our values and beliefs on our knowledge and understanding of the word. Therefore our values will never be the same as anyone else’s and our planet will continue to live in its complex, unpredictable, and confusing way.
