De-fueling the Forests

Hidden underneath the vibrant colors of the forest floor, a controlled burn pile lies smoldering after being extinguished by rain. The USFS Fire Prevention team performs controlled burns in conjunction with rainy weather to help prevent wild land fires.
Crewmembers Chris Mushrush, left, hands a gasoline container to Bryce Beard while he refuels his chainsaw. While in the field, crewmembers space themselves apart, making a refueling break one of a select few moments in the field designated for social interaction.
A member of the U.S. Forest Service Fire Prevention Crew, Steven Hanson, pours coolant into his chainsaw to stop it from overheating during continuous use.
Justin Jackson, a U.S. Forest Service Fire Prevention crewmember throws a branch out of his way in an effort to continue cutting down trees. Jackson cleared out a significant amount of dry brush, which will later be thrown into a controlled burn pile.
Bryce Beard, a member of the U.S. Forest Service Fire Prevention crew, talks with his supervisor (not pictured) while refilling his chainsaw. Beard spent his day trimming low-lying branches up to an 8ft minimum to prevent trees from easily catching fire.
