Artifact 8 – TED Talk

Objective:

To understand not just the that we should play more video games all together as a society, but what components, characteristics, and qualities we can take out of the feeling we get when playing.

This TED talk was one of my favorites TED talks that I have seen, which is what made me want to reflect on it. Before watching this video and discussing technology for week 8s topic, I had no idea that playing video games was beneficial to us as human beings, and our society. Growing up you all ways hear your parents telling you that video games will turn your brain to mush, and giving you a limit on the amount of time that I was allowed to play, yet watching this video makes me want to go back into time and have a scientific response back to my parents when they told me to get off after 30 minutes. If we increase the amount of video games that we play, it can improve the way we deal with world issues. I wanted to reflect on this because I was recently reading about how large industrial work forces have been incorporated a video game type system into their system in order to motivate and inspire their employees to work hard and be competitive.

This system is very interesting, yet has been proven to work very well. Employees are striving to be at the top, and receive certain incentives or points when achieving a certain task. This shows how it has been applied to real like and after seeing this TED talk I believe if we continue to incorporate certain aspects of video games into real life, we can improve society. What’s interested is that its not the video game itself that is beneficial to us, yet its the feeling that we feel when playing a game we enjoy. This needs to be applied to world leaders who are trying to fix the issues around the world. After reflecting on this video, I believe I really understood what the speaker was trying to address. Not the fact that playing video games was beneficial, but that the attitudes and characteristics of playing video games brings out a certain feeling that should be expressed by important leaders dealing with world issues.
