Artifact 6 – Personal

Objective:

Understand how what we wear is seen as an art form and put it into my own interpretation of how its perceived by society.

This passage really helped me specify what kind of person I am and choose to be. All of this came from my past and how I grew up in a nice Jewish family in Los Angeles California. Reading over this passage makes me ask what I could have been thinking about when writing this. The way we dress is everything in today’s society. It accounts for our status both financially and socially. I grew up in Los Angeles, and moved here 4 years ago to start college. Arriving here in Eugene and becoming accustomed to this living environment, its so evident how different the two cultures are. In Los Angeles, the way people dress is over and above, dressing to impress. In Eugene I have noticed that style and what we wear isn’t as prevalent. It could be due to the cold weather there, yet I believe it’s more about the idea of individuality and being more then just what you wear. Los Angeles is all about staying in the ranks of the status system. If you do have the new “it” then your excluded from society. I really enjoyed and am continuing to enjoy my experience here in Eugene. My style of dress code has completely been altered since I began here in 2011.

In detail I think I wear the close I wear in order to fit in to society. Although I have said its normal, normal is too broad of a term. I would like to think of how I dress as modest, not trying to draw attention, comfortable while still meeting societies needs. I do not choose “to be a physical deviant” because it “symbolically demonstrates ones disregard for the prevailing norms”(pg. 2). In an art form, I would like to see it as not boring, but settling interesting. I cannot say my style of wear is creative, yet it has its difference. I believe everyone has their own creativity in the way they dress, for each person wears their “art” differently.
