Is Food Art?

April 23, 2014

The author of this week’s article discusses food while analyzing its pros and cons to determine if food can be considered art. Personally, I would definitely say that food should be called art. It is not enough to just cook to make good food. Even though I cook I have never thought that I am a good cook. My dishes are very simple and I am not creative while cooking. I think that you have to be creative while cooking and artists are creative too. They have talent to create art so I think you need to have talent to make good food. I do not think you can just learn how to cook. As Telfer saying in her article “art is by definition a man-made thing, even if the human involvement need consist of no more than putting a natural object in a gallery and giving it a title” (pg.12). This quote definitely states that everything can be considered art as long as it has a title and be presented somewhere in front of people. Art is also a something that man can make. Food qualifies into those categories so it should certainly be called art.

The theory that best represents food and art in my opinion would be postmodernism because this theory defines art as interpretation. Food and art both can be created without any specific structure and still be very unique. “The assumption that interpretation is indispensable to appreciating and even identifying artworks has open a Pandora’s Box that is now called “postmodernism” (Dissanayake pg.19). This quote states that postmodernism theory is something more that just a safe art. It is art that no one has ever seen before. It represents something new and definitely not something that is ordinary. As art has changed throughout the times, food has changed as well. The creation of food became more spectacular instead of being traditional.

I too originally was thinking about qualifying art as post-modernism. This was an interesting topic this week. When I think of food all I can think of is not the daily food that I eat, but instead all of the great food that I see in magazines and on the food channels of television. There were a few things that made me think a bit deeper about the concept of food as post modernism when again reading through Dissanyake. Post modernism seems to be highly focused on taking interpretations of art instead of just creating art that fit into the other categories. This then made me wonder is there really an interpretation that comes from food? Can there be multiple interpretations of a beautiful dish of food, and can it have multiple meanings that are important in a cultural sense? I am not sure if food would fit into these categories, but I do agree that food does often have the feel of postmodernism. But, then I think is that the food or the current popular culture that makes me feel that way about the food? Would I feel different about food as art if we were still in the Renaissance era? I am not sure if I have the answers to this, but these were some things that came to mind when I was contemplating the same ideas.
