Norberg-Schultz

Norberg-Shultz uses Heidegger’s ideas of dwelling as a starting point to further his ideals of phenomenology in architecture. For instance, Heidegger explains the phenomena to ‘dwell’ to be based on human existence. Norberg-Schultz goes further to explain that elements of place, such as character, boundary, rhythm, and direction, are what truly affect human expression. I think Heidegger’s ideas are more conceptual while Norberg-Schultz uses a more physical representation of space through concrete Terms. He states, ‘the detail explains the environment and makes its character manifest.’
