Joy

Do you think his use of materials and building form are convincing?  Use specific examples.

I do believe that Joy’s use of materials and building form are convincing. The fact that he uses a more regional, almost vernacular way of building and picking materials is in a way what I feel architects should do more of. Creating innovative ideas do design for the space that the building is going to be places in. The home that Joy designed in the northeast with the classic gabled roof of the popularized in the 70s and 80s but putting a modern twist on it with the details that he designs is very convincing. The fact that he uses materials that of the region and forms of the region while underscoring those with the new modern details that he designs for them creates a truly innovative architecture for an old way of building.

Do you think the experimental characteristic of his projects is in anyway compromised by his fundamental basics?

I do not believe the experimental characteristic of his projects is in anyway compromised by his fundamental basics, on the contrary I believe that his fundamental basics underscores the experimental characteristics in a way that not only enhances the design but changes or questions the way that one might think about a certain type of building style such as the gable roof mentioned in the above answer.
