JOY!

Rick Joy is a master of expression through materiality. The simplicity and beauty of the raw Earth that is often featured in his work contributes to his simple and elegant forms. The scale of building and contrast of opening versus massive wall is ideally suited to the desert. The fact that the earthen walls are unsealed on the inside, like in the Convent house, is remarkable and brings the user back to the landscape. Though his work is experiential, this does not in my opinion detract from his basic building form and quality. Every building attempts to have a strong experiential factor, but some fail. I believe that the experiential characteristics of his buildings only add to the enjoyment of place and building, and will increase longevity and of his buildings in the long run.
