JUHANI PALLASMAA
How can we understand and determine a person’s experience of architecture?
Pallasmaa feels that the basic elements a building comprises, is no longer in relation to the outside thereby failing communication. A building may be experienced by the users in several different ways. Therefore it is not possible to design a building based on a single experience. Each design can have innumerable number of workable solutions. One way of designing a building that can work for most users is by responding to the context, climate, users, history, functionality, etc and designing on a broader sense where the interior relates to the exteriors contextually. Also, to understand others, it is first important to design something treating ourselves as the client and design the building for ourselves. This way once we understand what it means to us, we can attempt to understand the others. Good communication and observation can help understand other’s experience.
