Space and Feelings…
“Phenomenon of Place”
Why has this author been drawn to Heiddeger’s ideas as they relate to today’s architects and their work?
Norberg-Schultz has been drawn to Heiddeger’s ideas because they are in a way helping him make his case on the explanation of how one can evaluate space and the character of said space. Norberg-Schultz uses the way Hieddeger describes dwellings and how he distinguishes between dwelling and other forms of inhabiting a space directly on how he [Norberg-Schultz] separates and describes space and environment. The two seem to go hand in hand with using language of the past to generate the meaning of how one should look and separate the outside and inside space and he deconstructs the meaning of the poem “A Winter Evening” by Goerg Trakl.
“The Geometry of Feeling…….”
How can we understand and determine a person’s experience of architecture?
Pallasmaa gives many ways one can understand and determine a person’s expertise of architecture, I believe that to fully understand a person’s experience in architecture we must first understand our own experiences in that same space. Whether we are the designers or just a visitor, understanding our experience gives us a base to, in a way compare another person’s experience of the same space. One cannot simply determine someone else’s experience in of architecture if they themselves have not experienced it.
How do you interpret Pallassmaa’s ideas about the following?
All art emanates from the body…..art would not and cannot be art if we as the body do not put any significance to it. An object is nothing until one puts a value to it and makes it into something different.
Early childhood memories inform us and form us as we grow up….the memories of our past will guide and form how one thinks of something. This molding of ideas will then form our ways of thinking and form the person we will inevitably become.
Other arts create the importance of place and experience…..other art creates importance of place and experience because they give a grounding for what is being experienced in that place. Other forms of art, such as music or writing is shaping people’s ideas of what may be happening in that time giving importance to other things such as architecture. A painting could have portrayal of architecture or a poet could write about a magnificent piece of architecture.
Loneliness and silence of buildings…….buildings will inevitably be unoccupied and will have a silence and loneliness that is all too real in some architecture of today. Building are not being used constantly and when no one is occupying a space, silence and the sense of loneliness are its only inhabitants.
